Pokémon Sword and Shield quietly introduce auto-save to the series

Pokémon Sword and Shield Auto-Save

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield look to be shaking the series up in a huge way. They’re the first main series games to appear on a home console. They won’t feature all the previous games’ monsters. There will be a very basic MMO element to them. There’s even a pastry Pokémon with almost as many flavors as Baskin Robbins in Pokémon Sword and Shield. And that’s not to mention all the shiny new features expected from a shiny new Pokémon entry. Still, there seem to be some small changes in the works that will affect how players experience the game in a huge way. Auto-save, welcome to Pokémon.

Spotted in the video at about 0:45, a message saying “Now saving…” appears in the top right corner. In a video outlining four new features to Pokémon Sword and Shield, it’s almost ironic that there would be an even more game-changing one that slipped through.

In all previous entries, players could save the game virtually any time they weren’t in a Pokémon battle. However, the series has never featured an auto-save before. It’s possible that Pokémon Sword and Shield are taking some open-world notes from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It remains to be seen whether the feature can be toggled off, however, as it hasn’t been officially announced.

What do you think about auto-save being added to Pokémon Sword and Shield? Will this affect your gameplay? Let us know!
