Pokémon Snap 2 would need a “unique twist,” says Masuda

Pokémon Snap 2 Junichi Masuda

The Pokémon franchise rose to fame with its RPG gameplay, but one of its most beloved entries is a spin-off. Pokémon Snap made its Western debut on June 30, 1999, almost exactly 20 years ago. All these years later, faithful fans are still holding out hope for a true sequel. Game Freak has added some Snap-like features to its games, but will we ever get a Pokémon Snap 2? Game Central recently posed this question to Pokémon producer Junichi Masuda. Based on his answer, Game Freak hasn’t shut the door on the idea. However, they’d need a clever new angle to pursue it.

Hope for Pokémon Snap 2?

Game Central: I can’t believe it’s 2019 and there still isn’t a Pokémon Snap 2.

Both: [laughs]

Game Central: You had the Wii U GamePad and now you’ve got Nintendo Labo VR, which has an actual physical camera, why is there not a Pokémon Snap 2?! I’ll pre-order it right now if you agree to make it!

Both: [laughs]

Junichi Masuda: [laughs] All I can say is that I don’t think we can just make the same thing again. So we’d have to come up with a very unique twist on this if we do make another one.

Masuda believes Game Freak could only make Pokémon Snap 2 if they found a way to make it fresh. Do you agree, or would you be happy to see the same formula return, but with modern controls and graphics? And what gimmick or twist could Game Freak introduce to make the experience fresh and new?
