Pokémon Company CEO says developing for Switch was harder than expected

Developing a game for a handheld console is a wholly different beast than developing for a home console. Pokémon Company President and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara has acknowledged as much in an interview with DIME, where he discussed the state of the Pokémon franchise.

According to Nintendo Soup, Game Freak found that creating its first mainline Pokémon title on Switch with Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee was “more difficult than what we expected.” They struggled with how to create a game that was fun across all three Switch play styles — handheld, tabletop, and docked. Ishihara jokes some of the Game Freak team might claim that Pokémon Switch development was five times as difficult as Pokémon handheld development.

Yeah, that sounds about right to me. Welcome back to the big leagues, Game Freak and Pokémon Company. I hope the next mainline title is the feast of content and visuals that fans are craving.
