Many video games love to leave their mark with a creative, sometimes festive winter level. With dozens of examples throughout the company’s catalog, Nintendo games are no exception. You can expect plenty of snow and other winter delights to find their way into all sorts of titles from the publisher. What is your favorite winter level in a Nintendo game?
While I love levels like Freezeezy Peak in Banjo-Kazooie or the snowy grand prix in Diddy Kong Racing, the Fortress of Festivity from Pikmin 3 (and Pikmin 3 Deluxe)’s Mission Mode is my pick. The tabletop level is a treat for the eyes, loaded with colorful toys and festive winter decorations, but the strategic fun of trying to perfectly navigate the maze-like level for its scattered treasures is just so satisfying. It took me several tries to grab the Platinum Medal on this level, but through every failure, I had a big, seasonally appropriate smile on my face. The Fortress of Festivity perfectly encapsulates what makes Pikmin great: glorious aesthetics and clever design that coaxes out the inner strategist in all of us.
