What is your favorite game that came out of a delay?

Looking at accessibility in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

A whole bunch of delays dominated industry news today. In addition to Ubisoft knocking back seemingly every game on their docket, Sony pushed the long-awaited The Last of Us Part II from February to May of 2020. Nintendo is no stranger to delays themselves, most recently moving heavy hitter Animal Crossing: New Horizons into next year. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Lots of incredible titles have suffered such a fate, only to ultimately release to one accolade after another. What is your favorite game that came out of a delay?

Two obvious picks come to mind for me: Persona 5 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildPersona 5 missed its original target release date of Winter 2014 by about two and a half years, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was about two years tardy when it came out in March 2017. Both of those games are some of my favorites ever, with each landing in my personal top fifteen. The delays stunk at the time, but the dev teams put every extra second to good use, and now I can enjoy those games forever.

Persona 5 got delayed
Persona 5 never saw that delay coming

Talented studios have proven Shigeru Miyamoto’s famous quote true time and time again. Remember, folks, “a delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.” What is your favorite game that came out of a delay?
