For a while, many people were speculating that Tracer from Overwatch might come to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to coincide with the announcement of Overwatch on Switch. However, this didn’t happen. But since Sakurai intends to keep making DLC fighters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there’s still a chance to include an Overwatch representative, and the game’s lead director, Jeff Kaplan, is all for this.
In an IGN interview, Kaplan, also vice president of Blizzard Entertainment, talked about the possibility of Overwatch characters coming to Smash. He seemed warm to the idea and even said Nintendo could use any of the characters from the game:
To the Smash Brothers team, whatever character you want, we love them all. They’re all our babies, you can have any single one of them. We have 31 to choose from.
But of course, Kaplan favors Overwatch’s iconic cover character over the rest of the crew:
Tracer’s our girl, Tracer’s our mascot. She’d be my first choice. There’s a lot of great runners up. I think a lot of people can immediately see Doomfist gameplay applying to Smash, but if it were up to me, I’d like to see Tracer.
Wes Yanagi, the principal game producer of Overwatch‘s Switch port, also voiced that Tracer would be a good inclusion. However, he feels Winston could be a good choice as well.
So there you have it, folks! Blizzard is totally cool with letting Tracer or any Overwatch character into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Now Nintendo just needs to reach out, if they want. There are plenty of great heroes that could be a part of the massive roster, but there’s no doubt that Tracer would be the most iconic.
