Out of Line, hand-drawn puzzle platformer, gets July Switch release date

Out of Line Nintendo Switch release date July Hatinh Interactive Nerd Monkeys

Publisher Hatinh Interactive and developer Nerd Monkeys have announced a July 7, 2021 release date for hand-drawn puzzle platformer Out of Line on Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, the game has launched today on PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Humble Store, Gamesplanet. Preorders for the Switch version of Out of Line will begin July 1, and later this year, the game will come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The game is inspired by Studio Ghibli films (seems to be a theme lately), modern philosophy, and impressionist art, so it’s not likely to be a mindless jaunt through some jumping puzzles. The main character is San, and “As players assist the young man in recovering his memory and escaping an oppressive factory regime, they’ll uncover existential themes that relate to their own lives.” Gameplay-wise, there will be “dozens” of puzzles, and you will have to learn to use your spear to proceed.

My instinct is to express some skepticism when a game like Out of Line promises a rich philosophical experience, but it’s certainly been achieved to great effect from time to time. Perhaps Out of Line will join those ranks on PC and when it comes to Nintendo Switch upon its release date next month.
