NPD: Switch is top-selling platform for 2020, Nintendo dominates December charts

Nintendo Switch - Neon Waves NPD Nintendo Switch sales 2020

So, it turns out that Nintendo has been selling some pretty popular games over the festive season. According to some new NPD Group sales data released today by analyst Mat Piscatella, exactly half of the top-selling 20 games for December 2020 in the U.S. were Nintendo-published on Nintendo Switch. (This does not even factor in digital sales of these Switch games.) This includes three in the top 10, one of which is over three years old.

That game is unsurprisingly the evergreen Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which sits at number seven for the month of December. Super Mario 3D All-Stars rounds out the top 10 while, you guessed it, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is number six. The remaining seven games are within the 10-20 range, and they go all the way back to the launch period with titles like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The NPD data provides some other interesting Nintendo Switch game sales figures in 2020 too. All of the system’s top 10 games for the year are Nintendo first-party, and only Just Dance 2021 creeps in for December on Switch. Then there’s the hardware, where Nintendo Switch has been absolutely killin’ it in 2020.

Nintendo Switch is the bestselling system of the year, as well as for December 2020 specifically, another unsurprising sight in NPD data. This takes into account both units shipped and overall dollar sales, making it even more impressive. Finally, Switch sales in 2020 were the second highest yearly console figures ever in the U.S., beaten only by the Nintendo Wii in 2008.

It was a pretty good year then, and things don’t seem to be slowing down just yet. Will 2021 prove another record-breaking year for Nintendo? Let’s wait and see.
