Nintendo’s Switch successes reportedly leading it to cut back on mobile

It seems that the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has taught Nintendo a thing or two about mobile. A few years ago, the company delved into the mobile market, with titles like Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. These met with varying success rates. Now, according to a new Bloomberg report, Nintendo has returned to focusing almost solely on its own console ecosystem.

In May, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said, “We are not necessarily looking to continue releasing many new applications for the mobile market.” This stood in stark contrast to prior targets, where Nintendo planned to release two to three mobile games every year. Existing support will continue for such games already released, but Bloomberg suggests that anything new is more likely to launch on Switch.

Can you blame Nintendo, though? The Switch has been a massive success, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons only helped with huge digital revenue. The company now knows that players will fork out $60 for digital titles in droves. As games consultant Serkan Toto added, “In a sense, Nintendo’s enormous success on console reduced the need and the pressure to put resources into mobile.”

The below chart from Sensor Tower showcases Nintendo’s mobile market struggles. As you can see, many of the company’s mobile games have declined in profitability as of late.


Pocket Camp is the only game on there to see year-on-year growth, likely thanks to the launch of New Horizons. You can see, then, why Nintendo is hesitant about mobile. Will you be happy to see the Big N focus more on Switch?
