Earlier today, Nintendo held its latest financial briefing where it officially announced that the Switch has sold 14.58 million units worldwide sales. This puts it at a higher number than Wii U in just 10 months. Throughout 2017, there were non-stop reports as to how well the system was selling, so this achievement really isn’t all that surprising.
It turns out that the Switch has been selling so well that its performance has actually been higher than that of Nintendo’s previous smash-hit console the Wii, and Sony’s PS4 which has also been a massive seller for the past few years.
Check out this chart put together by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad:
It is of course very early days, but the Nintendo Switch is off to a strong start after just 10 months on sale.
It's currently outpacing Wii and PS4, due to its March release, but will likely drop behind or maintain a similar sales pattern over the next 14 months. pic.twitter.com/eiQqvtAxTg

As you can see, its sales levels were sticking close to the Wii and PS4 for quite some time before shooting up in the last few months. This sharp increase is likely due to the Switch stock shortages coming to an end after plaguing worldwide markets for several months last year. This was due to the unexpectedly high demand for the system from consumers; Nintendo has clearly brought stock production up to a level where units are now more readily available, thus allowing for higher sales (which further dismisses the many claims last year that Nintendo was trying to create artificial demand by purposefully understocking units).
Mr. Ahmad mentioned that sales levels could decrease in the coming months (which would be natural), but we still have to wait and see exactly when that will happen. The Switch turns a year-old in March, so its next sales milestone to look forward to will be how many units it managed to sell in a full year.
