Nintendo Switch pushes huge numbers in France, selling 5 million units by 2020

The Nintendo Switch has been a sales juggernaut across the board since it initially came onto the scene. And that momentum hasn’t really stopped at all. If anything, it’s doing better now than its earlier years. This trend can be seen in a lot of places, including France. There, it is reported that the Switch sold nearly 5 million units alone since launch until the end of 2020.

This sales data comes from a report by French publication Le Figaro. It conducted a review with Philippe Lavoue, the managing director at Nintendo France. According to Lavoue, the Switch saw “double digits” in terms of annual growth which “has never been seen before at Nintendo” at this point in a console’s lifecycle.

That’s an interesting thing to note. The Switch has been on the market for four straight years now; it’s actually about to start its fifth year. This is usually a time when sales start to level off for most systems, even the most successful ones. But, the Switch has been growing.

Having sold 3.3 million units by the end of 2019, the Switch has now sold 4.7 million units in France as of the end of 2020. That means 1.4 million units were sold throughout last year. For a country of over 67 million people, these metrics are not half bad at all.

A lot of this has to do with 2020 being such an oddball year. Due to the global pandemic, most people were stuck at home throughout 2020. This sudden shuddering of society led to many buying things to keep them occupied; video games included. So, the Nintendo Switch benefited extensively from this sudden change in market circumstances.

Time will tell to see how well the system fares as interest increases in the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. But, as long as those systems are hard to find, the Switch can enjoy some time in the limelight all by itself.
