Nintendo Switch Online services are down, eShop inaccessible

Nintndo Switch Online services down offline eShop inaccessible maybe coronavirus, maybe not

It has become apparent that Nintendo Switch Online services are down. The outage is widespread across the globe, causing issues for anyone wanting to play games online with friends and those who want to access the eShop. The issue makes it impossible for anyone to buy a new game digitally for Nintendo Switch. The news was confirmed earlier today by Nintendo on Twitter.

Nintendo Switch Online services outage

Nintendo’s network maintenance page noted the problem early on, but no update has been provided as of yet. The issue could potentially have been caused as a result of the influx of people playing their Switch online as they isolate themselves due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), but there is nothing concrete to back that up at this time.

Over the weekend, Xbox Live incidentally became unavailable for over two hours. Even Discord had an outage yesterday, immediately following a commitment from the company to extend its service to support those affected by coronavirus.

With so many people being instructed to self-isolate or work from home, networks around the world may be struggling to cope with the demand. Most schools in the U.K. have not been closed yet, but with half-term coming up there’s a good chance that the influx of young gamers wanting to play online will cripple any network services that haven’t been prepped.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is due to launch this coming Friday on March 20. Nintendo should certainly be able to fix their online services by then, but if they don’t, then the game’s launch sales won’t be nearly as strong as they should be.

We’ll update you on the status of Nintendo Switch Online services as the situation develops.

Started out playing Metroid 2 on the GameBoy at around 5 years-old, and now I write about games all day long. Can't play Switch and drive, I've tried. As time goes on the Switch is quickly becoming my favourite console of all time.
