Nintendo President Furukawa says no new Switch hardware in 2020

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa new hardware Switch 2020

Nintendo Switch has proven to be a massive success. The hybrid console has outsold all expectations, and its momentum has only gotten stronger since the cheaper Switch Lite was introduced. Still, there’s new hardware on the way from Sony and Microsoft, and that has some people worried. Can Switch still compete, or will Nintendo need new Switch hardware, like a Switch Pro, to stay in the game in 2020 and beyond? We’ve heard tons of rumors about upcoming devices, but nothing official. Today, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa seemed to rule that out.

Nintendo President: No new Switch hardware

This information comes from David Gibson, a well-known analyst in attendance at Nintendo’s shareholder briefing. According to Gibson’s tweets, Furukawa talked about the need to communicate Switch Lite’s value, then stated that Nintendo has no intention of releasing new Switch hardware in 2020. It seems they’d rather focus on getting the most out of the hardware they currently have available.

Update: We now have the full quote straight from the horse’s mouth. Here’s what Furukawa had to say:

Regarding Nintendo Switch, we believe that it is important to continue to communicate the appeal of both Nintendo Switch systems and expand the installed base. Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020.

Beyond 2020?

Does that officially lay talk of a Switch Pro to rest? Not necessarily. Nintendo hasn’t always been transparent about upcoming hardware in the past. They once famously denied the existence of 3DS XL just days before officially announcing it. That said, Furukawa’s official stance, for now, is that no new Switch hardware is coming in 2020. But that doesn’t rule out the future. If you’re hoping for a beefier model, you may just have to wait until 2021 or beyond.
