Nintendo Confirms Virtual Console for Switch Isn’t Happening

This news is bound to ruffle quite a few feathers but do read all the details before casting judgment.

According to a recent report from Kotaku who got in contact with Nintendo, the Virtual Console for Switch is not happening. But, the wording from Nintendo is what’s really important here. A spokesperson from the company provided this statement on the matter:

“There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.”

Did you notice the last half of that statement? There are no plans “under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.” Many commenters under Kotaku’s report pointed out that this does seem to indicate that Nintendo does something in the works, but it simply isn’t going to use the Virtual Console branding for it.

In a way, this can be likened to what the company has done with Nintendo Switch Online versus Nintendo Network. Switch Online is technically a continuation of Nintendo Network, but Nintendo decided to drop the NN branding for something new, signifying a change in course (that is, Switch Online is now a subscription-based service). So, if you’re upset by the news of no Switch VC, you can still take comfort in the likelihood that there’s something new on the horizon.

We’ve already seen classic games brought into the system in the form of Arcade Archives and Neo-Geo Classics. SEGA also has their own plans with SEGA Ages. Nintendo also recently announced that it’s bringing free NES games to the Switch Online service with the added perk of new online multiplayer functionality. Who’s to say that other classic games won’t get the same treatment under Switch Online? We’ll just have to wait and see how Nintendo handles it.
