It looks like Niantic has revived a 12-year-old meme for Pokémon GO. If you were around for some really old Pokémon memes, you’re probably familiar with Mudkip.
Outside of being one of the starter Pokémon in the Hoenn region, Mudkip is widely known for an infamous edited clip from the anime. This particular clip features a scene in which two Mudkip stare at each other, exchanging a simple conversation.
So how is Niantic involved? Well, as some of you may know, Pokémon GO is centering its next Community Day around Mudkip. In the most recent promo for the event, you can see a couple of Mudkips that seem to call back to this ancient meme.
Did you miss it? Pay closer attention to the two Mudkips at the bottom left. Still don’t see it? I’ll help you out.
I didn't even notice.
Well played, Niantic. pic.twitter.com/RlL7TbGFZg

Well, that’s one way of paying homage to an old internet meme. Glad to see that some people still like Mudkip so much after all these years.
Despite how you may feel about companies putting memes in their advertisements, I think it’s kind of cute. It’s not too intrusive, and it serves as a small nod to the older fans that are familiar with the reference.
