Who’s that (new) Pokemon?

Pokemon Let's Go

In a somewhat unconventional, surprise move, a brand new steel-type Pokemon has been revealed. The new Pokemon was discovered in Pokemon GO, marking a first for the series and an important step forward for Pokemon GO‘s place in the Pokemon landscape. This is especially true since we are less than two months from the next console release in the Pokemon Let’s Go games. Officially revealed today, we can finally formally meet this new critter. So, who’s that Pokemon?

It’s Meltan!

Meltan, or the Hex Nut Pokemon, is a steel-type. Its fluid shape comes from its liquid-metal composition. Here is what Meltan’s Pokedex entry looks like.

Name:  Meltan
Category:  Hex Nut Pokémon
Height:  0’08”
Weight:  17.6 lbs.
Type:  Steel

The formal Meltan announcement comes after a few days of confusing rumors. Numerous Pokemon GO players reported sights of Ditto appearing as Meltan. According to a press release, Professor Willow and Professor Oak are both hard at work studying Meltan. Furthermore, Meltan can apparently be found in Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu, but it seems that Pokemon GO will somehow be necessary for accessing Meltan in the Pokemon Let’s Go games.

There’s a lot of exciting stuff to take in here. Professor Oak’s excited reaction makes it clear that Meltan has some sort of mythical status, so maybe he’s an ancient or legendary Pokemon. If he is legendary, that could point to an exciting quest in Pokemon Let’s Go, Pokemon GO, or both. Also, just the fact that at least one brand new Pokemon will almost certainly be capturable in the Pokemon Let’s Go games is very exciting news, sure to draw in some hardcore Pokemon fans who may have been on the fence before. Requiring Pokemon GO connectivity to access new monsters in the Pokemon Let’s Go counterparts is also probably the most sure-fire way to convince even the most hesitant fans to try out the smartphone phenom.

So, what do you think of this brand new Pokemon? How soon do you think we’ll be able to capture Meltan? Does this make you more or less excited for Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu?
