NES Open Mario and Light Suit Samus Alternate Costumes Revealed

With new characters and the addition of customization, making yourself stand out in the battlefield will be easier than ever in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. In today’s official Smash Bros. update, Sakurai has unveiled two new alternate costumes to help individualize your fighter even more. With this confirmation and other recent updates concerning alternate outfits, it seems as though the entire roster may be getting at least a couple alternate skins each. Today’s screenshot shows off an alternate suit for everyone’s favorite space-faring bounty hunter and an obscure skin choice for Nintendo’s flagship plumber.

\”Pic of the day. The character farther in the back isn\’t from the Imperial forces, and the character in the front is not the infamous drum-playing puppet in Osaka. No, Mario is actually wearing an outfit from Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course! NES Open Tournament Golf might be a more familiar title.\”

Although we\’re about a week out from this year’s Fourth of July here in the states, Mario decided it was better to wear his stars-and-stripes later than never. This getup, as Sakurai points out, was featured in NES Open Tournament Golf, which featured a number of characters from the Mushroom Kingdom. Meanwhile, Samus Aran of Metroid stands behind him wearing the Light Suit, the last suit upgrade Samus can collect in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes for the Gamecube. In that title, this suit allowed Samus to freely traverse Dark Aether without taking damage from the deadly atmosphere.

While it’s wonderful to see Mario with some cool alternate outfits, seeing Samus in an alternate suit is quite the treat. Considering Metroid: Other M, the game this particular Samus appearance hails from, didn\’t have any cool suit upgrades like most Metroid games, seeing Samus get alternate suits to pay tribute to older Metroid games was a classy decision made by Sakurai and his team.

What do you think about today’s revealed alternate costumes? Good picks or should they have stayed in their respective games? What other costumes would you like to see for these characters or others? Sound off in the comments below with your thoughts!
