Arc System Works has commenced a new project to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun, also known as Renegade in the West.
Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun was originally released for arcades in May 1986 as Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun in Japan. Technos Japan Corp developed and published the first arcade game. It first appeared in the West with a few localization changes by Taito in December 1986 as Renegade.
After the inaugural Kunio-kun title, the franchise would go on to see numerous sequels, spinoffs, ports, remasters, remakes, and almost anything else Kunio-kun that you can think of. The latest entry is River City Girls that features the girlfriends of Kunio and Riki, the main protagonists of the franchise, as the main characters.
Publisher Arc System Works acquired all intellectual properties of Technos Japan in 2015 and has been keeping the Kunio-kun franchise going since then. We still don’t know when the project announcements are coming, but for now, check out the sweet 35th anniversary logo that incorporates Kunio and Riki’s hairstyle:
Arc System Works will have announcements for new games, products, collaborations, and more for the Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun 35th anniversary project throughout the year. All Kunio-kun games are also on a massive 80% off sale for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in Japan until June 2, 2021.
