Next month, the world will be screaming “MORTAL KOMBAT” once again. As we get closer to release, more characters and gameplay elements are being revealed. Today is a big one, though. Now we got more of a taste of the story mode in Mortal Kombat 11. And we got some character reveals along for the ride. Check it out.
Since this is the story trailer, it seems only right to look at the story elements first. Mortal Kombat 11 boss Kronika is waging war against Raiden for meddling with the timestream. She has enlisted allies from the past and present to do so, including big baddie Shao Kahn. The fact that a preorder character is part of a NetherRealm story is kind of a big deal. That wasn’t the case for Goro in Mortal Kombat X or Darkseid in Injustice 2.
Raiden is not slouching in amassing an army in kind. He has enlisted the help of Kotal Kahn and his forces along with Liu Kang from the past. Since Liu Kang of this timeline is opposed to Raiden, we’ll be sure to see some mirror matches at play. In fact, part of the trailer has a funny exchange between the two Johnny Cages regarding jetpacks. The older Cage doesn’t seem amused by his younger self.
There are also some great new looks at characters that weren’t previously confirmed. Cassie Cage is seen in action and has apparently cranked up the millennial schtick to 11 (fitting). Kano is shown off, particularly his past self, and even brandishes a minigun Jesse Ventura style. Cowboy gunslinger Erron Black returns looking badass as ever. His Fatal Blow even brings back his coin flip trick shots. This is also the first time we’re seeing Kotal Kahn return from MKX. Although there’s no gameplay, his big sawblade sword is clearly making a return.
Then there’s Jacqui Briggs who is the second “Kombat Kid” to return from Mortal Kombat X. She went through quite a bit of a redesign sporting short dreads and a tech suit. We even got a look at her Fatality blowing off pieces of Erron Black. Here’s hoping she’s more developed as a character this time around.
The story trailer also gave us what looks like a couple of brand new characters. They can be seen during the part where Kronika and Shao Kahn are forming their *ahem* deadly alliance.
Next to Shao Kahn is some green hooded character with what looks to be extra arms behind him. Before seeing the arms, my best guess was that this was Reptile, but the design is too radically different.
Then there’s the other hooded figure next to Kronika. This one is wearing a mask and long white and teal robe. They seem like some kind of magic user, but it’s hard to say from a few frames. Clearly, this character is close to Kronika much like Geras.
There is so much more we have yet to see before Mortal Kombat 11 is released next month. This was a good chunk of information, though. NetherRealm Studios is once again flexing their muscles that they are the king of fighting game story modes.
