Monark gameplay trailer highlights battles, exploration, and events

FuRyu and Lancarse have released a gameplay trailer for the upcoming RPG Monark by former Shin Megami Tensei staff. The video goes over the three main parts of the gameplay cycle: exploration, battles, and events.

After a short introduction, the trailer starts with a look at the exploration part of the game. This part consists of exploring the madness-inducing Mist that engulfs Shin Mikado Academy. However, keep in mind that your character’s MAD level gradually increases while exploring. When the MAD level reaches 100%, it results in a game over.

The “free movement” battle system, as the name suggests, allows you to move around freely in combat. You can position yourself to go behind enemies and deal extra damage or perform combo moves with party members within the vicinity. The combat gameplay in Monark is a hybrid of action and turn-based battles with an emphasis on positioning.

Lastly, the event parts are all about developing your Ego. The EGO system is essentially a stats parameter that increases based on quiz results and choices that you make. These stats also influence your underlings known as “Fiends” and their stats. For example, the Fiends won’t be able to equip some items unless your stats are high enough, similar to equipping items in Souls games.
