Mina the Hollower is the new Yacht Club Zelda-like, on Kickstarter now

Mina the Hollower reveal announcement trailer Kickstarter Yacht Club Games Shovel Knight action adventure Game Boy Color GBC 2D action adventure

At its presentation todayShovel Knight creator Yacht Club Games has announced Mina the Hollower, a 2D action adventure with Game Boy Color-inspired visuals that is channeling some massive The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening energy, and it is on Kickstarter now. It is not strictly a top-down adventure though, as there are also shades of Castlevania and Bloodborne in the game. You even collect experience and level up. The Mina the Hollower announcement trailer is a glorious mish-mash of new and old.

The premise of the game is that Mina is a “whip-wielding Hollower and visionary inventer” whose Spark Technology brought power and prosperity to the Tenebrous Isle, but now it seems that somebody has sabotaged and disabled the Spark Generators. You will use various weapons and items, but especially your whip and digging capability, to fight enemies and uncover the truth. Meanwhile, the world is inspired by classic Gothic horror like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And the screen resolution of gameplay is 256×144, essentially making it a “widescreen” version of the 160×144 offered by Game Boy. (That’s so cool.)

The Mina the Hollower Kickstarter page offers plenty more character and world details, plus console release details and different backer tiers. The game’s platforms are not finalized yet, but it appears to be tentatively planned for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox platforms, and PC. The release date is a question mark too, with the Kickstarter vaguely pegging a December 2023 release window, but Yacht Club had this to say about it:

The biggest risk is that Mina the Hollower may take longer than anticipated. We always prioritize quality, even if that means delaying a project a little until it’s ready to meet the world. If that ends up happening, do not fret. We’ve always been transparent about our development process and you’ll be in the loop every step of the way! We look forward to creating something awesome with you.

Let us know what you think of this glorious Game Boy Color / Zelda / Castlevania / Bloodborne mash-up from Yacht Club Games, and tell us if you’re going to back the Mina the Hollower Kickstarter.
