Metal Gear franchise total sales have reached 58 million at Konami

Konami Metal Gear Solid franchise total sales 58 million units sold

Konami has released some updated sales data for its various video game series, and it reveals that Metal Gear franchise total sales have reached 58 million copies sold as of December 31, 2021. That is a whole lot of nuke-launching Metal Gears shipped, and it means the franchise has sold 900,000 copies just since March 31, 2021. Yet despite those appreciable sales figures, there hasn’t been a new entry in the Konami franchise since 2018’s ill-fated Metal Gear Survive, a survival-based spin-off of Metal Gear Solid V that had no association with series creator Hideo Kojima, who had left the company by then.

Nonetheless, starting in 2020, Konami made a small effort to start making the franchise more accessible on platforms when it put Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance on PC platform GOG. (Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 have been subsequently removed from digital storefronts, temporarily at least, due to licensing issues to work out.) And more recently, there is a spicy hot report that developer Virtuos is allegedly remaking or reimagining Metal Gear Solid 3 for Konami. That report also indicates modern remasters of Metal Gear Solid games could be in development.

Lastly and certainly not least, Oscar Isaac is starring as Solid Snake in a Metal Gear Solid movie directed by Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. So while Konami isn’t doing a whole lot with Metal Gear at the moment, there’s plenty of hope that the games can maintain some degree of relevancy. At the least, it’s impressive that total franchise sales of Metal Gear continue to climb even when there are no new games to talk about.
