Publisher Kalypso Media and Australian developer Torus Games have announced Matchpoint – Tennis Championships for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC for a spring 2022 release. The game is aiming for authentic simulation tennis, in both player animations and ball physics, which makes it a much different experience than the arcade-ish Mario Tennis Aces. The music-less Matchpoint – Tennis Championships announcement trailer really drives home how much Torus and Kalypso care about creating an authentic experience, as if you’re watching a match on TV.
The game will launch with 16 real-life elite tennis stars, including Danill Medvedev, Garbine Muguruza, Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkaczs, Nick Kyrgios, Benoit Paire, Heather Watson, Hugo Gaston, Madison Keys, Victoria Azarenka, Carlos Alcaraz, Pablo Carreno Busta, Taylor Fritz, Amanda Anisimova, and Kei Nishikori. I don’t know any of those people, but maybe you do!
Additionally, Matchpoint – Tennis Championships will have a career mode, the ability to customize your own tennis player with racquet hand preferences and brand-name clothing, and the ability to play competitively in local and online matches. There is also a replay function, to admire or study your gameplay outcomes. And lastly, it will offer minigames in practice and training modes, because few games are complete without extra minigames.
