Masahiro Sakurai participated in 4Gamer‘s year-end interview for the first time ever, where he talked about his “winners” of 2021, which included the horror deck-building game Inscryption, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and Souls series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.
Before answering the questions, Sakurai explained that he was invited to 4Gamer‘s year-end interview every year, but he had to decline up until now. Since the development of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is over, he decided to participate in the 2021 edition. However, Sakurai does not know whether he’ll show up for it next year.
Here’s our full translation of the Masahiro Sakurai segment from the 4Gamer end-of-year 2021 interview, discussing his various winners:
Which games released in 2021 left the biggest impression (or had the biggest impact) on you?
Masahiro Sakurai: “I play a considerable amount of games, so I’ll go with something more recent, and that would be Inscryption. It’s a card game with a lot of meta elements, and it goes beyond the boundaries of an ordinary game.
Many players might say the same thing, but it’s best going into it without knowing anything ahead of time, so please give it a shot.”
What entertainment content in 2021 left you with the biggest impression ?
Masahiro Sakurai: “It is remarkable how active the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is. If you include the original work on Disney+, it is difficult to keep up with how many titles they’re working on, how many people are working on it, just the entire scope of it all.
Not to mention they’re all high-quality. During the middle of the pandemic!!
I felt that the power behind the production that kept everything consistent was top-notch.”
Who personally caught your attention in 2021?
Masahiro Sakurai: “I respect all creators, but if I had to pick one it would be Hidetaka Miyazaki (Souls series creator). I think that he’s one of the best in the world when it comes to being a director with a sense of balance, and he continues to be a great influence on the industry. It might sound a bit strange to say that his work is ‘highly balanced,’ but directing is all about making choices.”
Would you please share any aspirations for 2022 or a message for the readers?
Masahiro Sakurai: “I don’t have any particular aspirations to share.
It might take time until I do anything, so I think it’s best to forget about me for a while.”
Sakurai previously mentioned that it might be better to forget about him, but we all know that that isn’t happening anytime soon. He plans to lay low for a while, so perhaps he’ll finally get that much-earned rest. In any case, it’s good to see him still around.
