Marvel’s Midnight Suns gameplay showcase has Wolverine vs. Sabretooth

Marvel 2K Firaxis card-based tactics combat Wolverine Sabretooth gameplay showcase Marvels Midnight Suns Marvel's

Marvel, publisher 2K, and developer Firaxis Games have presented a 20-minute gameplay showcase for card-based tactical game Marvel’s Midnight Suns, showing off some basic gameplay mechanics and a showdown between Wolverine and Sabretooth. Producer Caroline Guevara, Creative Director Jake Solomon, and Franchise Producer Garth DeAngelis appeared at the showcase to discuss it all.

Several parts of the Marvel’s Midnight Suns gameplay showcase included things we have seen before, but now presented in a little more detail. For starters, we see more of the Abbey, your superhero base that was created just for this game. Between missions, your customizable protagonist the Hunter has to actively decide which teammates to spend time with, which furthers their personal stories and will have some effects on gameplay. Additionally, the game’s major nemesis, Lilith, can corrupt anyone with a single touch, meaning you will be battling both villains and other heroes over the course of the game’s meaty single-player campaign. Sabretooth seems content to beat up on Wolverine and the Hunter regardless though.

There are three different types of abilities for use in battle, one of which is of course attacks. Another is skills, which can buff characters or have various other effects. Lastly, there are special abilities called Heroics that are activated by spending Heroism, a currency that is charged up by playing cards. Battles apparently revolve around smart use of Heroics. Character placement and the environment can also be used to your strategic advantage to do additional damage.

Each boss in Marvel’s Midnight Suns has several unique abilities, and Sabretooth has Frenzy, which sounds like he will counterattack a lot of your actions. This in turn makes you think even harder about your next move against him and his gun-toting lackeys. Meanwhile, Wolverine can hit a lot of enemies at once and taunt enemies to come after him. And like in the old X-Men Legends games, he can regenerate health.

Frankly, the Marvel’s Midnight Suns gameplay showcase and its Wolverine / Sabretooth action has really helped me warm up to the game. I think it looks like a lot of fun now, even with that card combat. Let us know how you’re feeling about the game now that you’ve seen more of it.
