Mario Party romhack turns the original game’s boards into a 3D platformer

Mario PArty 64

Mario Party 64 is a Super Mario 64 romhack that turns boards from the original Nintendo 64 party game into a fully-fledged 3D platformer. The fan-made game makes a stage out of each of Mario Party‘s eight boards, scatters seventy collectible stars throughout. Mario Party 64 also offers its own take on over a dozen popular minigames, including Mushroom Mix-Up, Platform Peril, Bash ‘n’ Cash, Bobslep Run, Bombsketball and more. The trailer below, from the mod’s designer, MrComit, offers download instructions and gives a quick look at Mario dashing, jumping, and sliding through the different stages and minigames. The Nintendo 64 mod scene is very active. Designers constantly churn out refreshing, creative takes on their favorite 64-bit classics–just last month, for example, popular modder Kaze Emanuar debuted a hack for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that turned Super Mario 64‘s Shifting Sand Land into a complete dungeon. That said, Mario Party 64 is one of the coolest mods I’ve yet seen. Mario Party boards are colorful, eye-popping, fantastical creations. In other words, they were just a few tweaks away from being absolutely perfect for a 3D platformer.
