Skip it: Super Mario Odyssey gamer finds way to bypass endgame section

Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best titles available on the Switch. It wowed gamers with some amazing features, like the capture mechanic and 2D pipe sections. During the last sequence in the game, both of these aspects combine to create an unforgettable experience. However, one player has found a way to ignore part of this section entirely. Which is good news for speedrunners. But bad news for the developers who wanted fans to encounter a special moment.

Super Mario Odyssey is a game to savor

Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t beaten the game yet:

During the endgame, Mario must use Cappy to capture the body of Bowser. Using his new form, the amalgamation carries Peach on his shoulder to safety. At one point, the team enters a 2D pipe and must climb a path. It’s a sight to behold because you see 8-bit Peach riding 8-bit Bowser with a red hat and mustache.

Speedrunner miiwii912 has discovered a way to skip this sequence entirely:

It looks like miiwii utilizes hidden blocks to jump their way over the 2D section. The structures are part of Super Mario Odyssey‘s code. Perhaps this skip was meant to be uncovered all along? Every other 2D portion can be circumvented, too. Therefore, I sense a lot of speedrunners are going to compete for the world record in the coming hours.
