Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn confirmed compatible with all 3DS consoles

One of the titles announced during the Nintendo Direct in August was the 3DS port of Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Renamed as Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn, the enhanced re-release aims to bring new abilities, modes, and minigames to the still-popular handheld. Despite the trailer shown during the Direct being cut and dry on what to expect, Nintendo’s site was not.

As displayed on Nintendo’s product page, Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn was shown to be for “New Nintendo 3DS systems only.” This confused many fans (including us) as the trailer didn’t mention anything of the sort. It was fair to assume then that the 2019 release would be available for all 3DS and 2DS consoles.

Apparently, this was simply a mistake. Nintendo has since updated the product page to simply say “Nintendo 3DS.” Whew!

While there are certainly a handful of New 3DS-only games, it’s good to know this is not the case for our favorite pink puffball. Those who own older or downgraded options are already locked out from playing some major titles. These include Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS EditionFire Emblem WarriorsXenoblade Chronicles 3D, and more.  That’s also not including the lineup of SNES games that can only be played via New Nintendo 3DS consoles.

Even More Epic

Originally released for the Wii in 2010, Kirby’s Epic Yarn put a new *ahem* “spin” on the franchise. The cute art style and lenient gameplay proved to be a hit for those looking for a more pleasant platforming experience. It was then released again for the Wii U eShop in 2016.

Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn will see a release in 2019. Some additions as briefly mentioned include new modes such as the Devilish Mode which pits players in a fun, challenging race. Some of the new minigames will also have players in control of Kirby mainstays Meta Knight and King Dedede.
