Back on Monday, it came out that Jamie Lee Curtis is set to play Tannis in Lionsgate and Gearbox Software’s Borderlands movie. Prior to that, we knew that Cate Blanchett will be playing Lilith and that Kevin Hart is playing Roland. Now, the news has broken that comedy actor and all-around lovable madman Jack Black will play Claptrap in the Borderlands movie. Claptrap is a sarcastic robot that seems to be very well loved by the series fandom, and Jack Black sounds like as good a pick as any to bring such a character to life.
Jack Black is no stranger to video games, as he was basically the protagonist of Double Fine Productions’ Brutal Legend back in 2009. He also starred in the two recent, surprisingly awesome Jumanji films, which feature a premise involving video games brought to life. With Jack Black as Claptrap and Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart (also in the recent Jumanji films), and Jamie Lee Curtis along for the ride, the Borderlands movie has a preposterous amount of star power now. It even has a script from Emmy-winning Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.
It’s all on director Eli Roth to stick the landing now. About this recent development, he said, “I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth. Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen.”
