Last month, we reported that popular JYP K-pop group Itzy was doing a collaboration with The Pokémon Company for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Unite, and Pokémon Trading Card Game, and the announcement included a brief interview with the group. And today (or tomorrow in Korea, where it is already February 9), as promised, the Itzy Pokémon Legends: Arceus commercial has dropped, and the girls actually speak English in it. Granted, it’s extremely unnatural English, and they really should have had Lia speak the dialogue since she speaks great English — but it’s English nonetheless! There’s also a separate TikTok video.
The Itzy Pokémon Legends: Arceus commercial has been released in 15-second and 30-second versions, and all that the 30-second version adds is extra posing and dancing, set to an English version of one of their most popular songs “Wannabe.” Naturally, we’ve chosen to embed the 30-second version because that posing and dancing is very important. The theme of the commercial is that now you “Wannabe a Legend,” which is actually kind of clever.
Additionally, The Pokémon Company has surprised fans with a second short interview with Itzy about the game franchise. The interview still butchers the official English spelling of their individual names, which is bizarre considering the commercial itself spells them correctly. But whatever. Enjoy!
Second Itzy interview, following the Pokémon Legends: Arceus commercial
1. How do you feel about this shoot?
Leah: I grew up watching Pokémon since I was a kid, so I’m very happy to have a tie-up! I had a lot of fun during the filming (laughs). Originally, I liked Snorlax, but I fell in love with Eevee during this shoot… (laughs)
Ryuujin: It was a great honor and a strange feeling to be a model for a Pokémon commercial, which I’ve loved since I was a child.
2. Have you ever played a Pokémon game?
Yeaji: I remember walking around and catching Pokémon when “Pokémon GO” was even more exciting than it is now! I think I mainly caught the cute ones.
Ryuujin: I was always playing with a game console when I was little.
Chae-ryong: I was addicted to “Pokémon GO” and once walked around Gangnam Station with YoonA on a cold winter day. It was fun to see so many new Pokémon, different from my usual commute, and we often walked around even though it was cold!
YoonA: When I was a trainee, I got hooked on “Pokémon GO” with my sister Chae-ryong, and I remember walking around Gangnam Station with her, trying to catch Pokémon with more enthusiasm than anyone else.
