How to defeat Hisuian Avalugg boss in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

The last Frenzied Noble you’ll take on in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is Hisuian Avalugg, Lord of the Tundra, found in the Alabaster Icelands. After trekking through Snowpoint Temple and acquiring Braviary as the final rideable Pokémon, you’ll then be able to work your way towards this daunting encounter. While I personally didn’t have quite as much trouble with this fight as with Arcanine and Electrode, the final Noble encounter may still create a struggle for some. This Pokémon Legends: Arceus boss guide for how to defeat the Hisuian Avalugg will give you the full breakdown of this fight you need.

How to battle the Hisuian Avalugg boss in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Hisuian Avalugg is a Level 56 dual Ice / Rock type, making it double-weak to Fighting or Steel-type attacks. If this isn’t an option for you, Water, Grass, Ground, and Rock type attacks are still super effective, making them viable backups. Meanwhile, you’ll want to avoid the half-effective Normal, Ice, Poison, and Flying type attacks. Avalugg sports Ground, Ice, and Normal type attacks against you, so be wary of those when determining your defensive matchups.

Going into the fight, you’ll be located on a big, triangular snow-covered plateau with Avalugg towering a distance in front of you. This means you won’t be able to get right up next to it like you could with the other Noble Pokémon, so prepare your throwing arm accordingly. You will often have a brief moment between attacks to throw Snow Balms at the boss, but don’t get too greedy either.

Next, as with the other fights, if you fail at any point, you always have the option to continue the fight with some of the damage you’ve already done still in place. It seems the checkpoints for this are about every fourth of its health. Lastly, Avalugg’s attacks are very directional in nature, so for clarity, the directions I mention are from the perspective of looking straight at it. If you’re looking straight ahead at Avalugg, when I say “right,” I mean your right / its left.

Avalugg will start the fight by firing ice projectiles in a sweeping horizontal motion from right to left, then reversing and repeating this pattern three or four times. It is possible to dodge roll through or between these projectiles to give yourself a brief opening to attack the boss, but the safest thing to do for survival is to stay ahead of the projectiles and pass through the gap Avalugg leaves in them just before switching directions.

After this first attack, Avalugg will pause and roar at you, signaling its next attack. Starting at the edge of the arena closest to Avalugg, you’ll see small icy whirlwinds spawn in a vertical line going down the center of the arena. After a brief moment, icicles will shoot up from the ground within these whirlwinds, so simply step or dodge to the side (preferably to the left) to avoid them. As the middle line of icicles start to finish their path, Avalugg will repeat the process off to the right side, then one last time off to the left.

Immediately after this attack, Avalugg will throw a few more ice projectiles at you, though this time they target where you’re standing when it launches. Dodge out of the way as you see fit, but a simple left-to-right shuffle should suffice. After these projectiles, Avalugg will turn towards the right and start firing a laser beam that sweeps across the arena in a leftward direction. The only way to avoid this is to make use of the dodge roll’s invincibility window and roll through the laser.

Once the laser subsides, Avalugg will drop its guard, allowing you to send out a Pokémon to fight it, provided you were successful in dodging the laser. Defeating the Hisuian Avalugg boss here will, as with other Noble bosses in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, leave it defenseless for a brief window, giving you a much needed opportunity to throw Snow Balms at it.

About halfway through the fight, Avalugg gains a new icicle attack. Starting with a hearty roar, Avalugg will generate icy whirlwinds in a triangular pattern starting at the edge closest to it. This attack generates icicles in a horizontal sweeping motion until it gets about halfway back on the platform, so stay towards the rear, away from the boss. As a visual reference, this attack goes in a pattern similar to how bowling pins are set up.

Once this triangular attack finishes, Avalugg will throw more projectiles at you, those these are significantly faster than before. Again, just keep dodging out of the way. You’ll then see a few more sets of icicles spawn in a vertical line down the center of the arena, before Avalugg once again moves to its laser. Unlike before, the icicle fields stay in place during the laser attack, so be wary of them as you dodge through the laser. Successfully dodging the laser again provides an opportunity for a Pokémon battle if needed, after which the fight continues in that pattern until the end.
