Toy-maker Mattel and Koch Media developer Milestone have announced Hot Wheels Unleashed, a new arcade racing game based in the iconic Hot Wheels property, and it will come to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on Sept. 30. Offering single-player and multiplayer races, both online and offline with split-screen functionality, the game is aiming to take your usual Hot Wheels experience to the next level. The Hot Wheels Unleashed announcement trailer seems to be a bunch of prerendered footage, which tells us absolutely nothing about how the real game will play, but at least it looks nice, I guess.
Amid a lot of PR fluff, there is one useful nugget of information about what to really expect from Hot Wheels Unleashed:
The gameplay includes adrenaline-filled races, an extended choice of Hot Wheels vehicles with different attributes and rarity levels that players can customize with different skins, and jaw-dropping tracks set in everyday-life locations with special track pieces and interactive items. The game also features a revolutionary Track Editor enabling players to customize tracks in any game environment and share them with the game’s community.
Games with track editors have existed for over a decade, so I’m not sure how exactly it will be revolutionary in this game. In any case, stay tuned for more details from this expansion of the Mattel IP. The game is already available to preorder despite there being no smart reason to do so yet.
