Gensou SkyDrift, super weird racer by ex-Mario Kart staff, hits next month

Gensou SkyDrift Switch Mario Kart: Double Dash release date illuCalab Unties

Gensou SkyDrift is a Touhou Project racing game coming to Nintendo Switch and PC on Dec. 12, with a PlayStation 4 release for Q1 2020. It arrives via unique Sony label Unties and developer illuCalab, and reportedly staff who worked on Mario Kart: Double Dash!! worked on this game. The game looks pretty fun in a budget-minded sort of way, but before we talk about anything else, let’s address the elephant in the room: In Gensou SkyDrift, you ride people.

Literally, you ride around on flying humans in this game. Somehow. From magic, I guess? I don’t know, man. Just watch.

You select two unique racers from a roster of 20, and apparently each racer has their own set of power-ups. Racers can switch between being top or bottom position (how racy). There are over 15 stages and Story, Versus, and Time Attack modes. Online multiplayer is an option as well for upward of eight players.

Preorders for Gensou SkyDrift begin on Dec. 5, and the game will launch at a 20 percent discount. It otherwise retails for $23.99. If you loved Mario Kart: Double Dash!! on GameCube, maybe consider snuggling up to this game for a cozy Christmas (or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, whatever).
