Genshin Impact gets more backlash over Breath of the Wild comparisons

Genshin Impact

The Chinese-developed PC/iOS game Genshin Impact has already been racked with criticism over its similarities to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Comparisons have been drawn over many aspects of the game, from visuals to gameplay. Genshin Impact is being developed by Mihoyo, creators of the mobile game Honkai Impact 3rd.

At the ChinaJoy expo earlier this week, Genshin Impact was also announced for the PlayStation 4. However, some attendees were apparently not happy about this announcement, or about the game in general.

Genshin Impact vs. Breath of the Wild

While it’s easy to say that it certainly does look a lot like Breath of the Wild, it’s harder to say if it goes the full course of infringement. At this point, it certainly does not seem like it does enough to smash a PS4 over. From footage of the closed beta, though, we can make some assertions for ourselves. The opening scenes portray your hero or heroine waking up from an indeterminably long sleep into a world they are no longer familiar with. From there, the story similarities seem to stop.

The rest of the gameplay shows off an open-world adventure. Collecting items and fighting enemies hardly qualifies Genshin Impact as a rip-off in my book. I will admit, though, that the free climbing, certain menus, some sound effects, and the grass textures, in particular, do lend a little credence to the claim. Meanwhile, the combat has a nice, action JRPG look to it. Genshin Impact seems to have put more importance on combat than Breath of the Wild does. The game also looks visually stunning.

What do you think? Is all of this anger justified? Does Genshin Impact take it too far, or is it an innocent homage? Let us know what you all think in the comments below.
