Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as a video game NPC who gains sentience

Free Guy movie video game Ryan Reynolds trailer

Hey, you remember ReBoot? The pioneering 3D animated show with Dot Matrix, Bob, and Enzo? The one about the computer programs who existed to provide challenges to video game players? I loved ReBoot, but it sure is hard to look at now. You know what’s not hard to look at? Ryan Reynolds. So it is with the greatest pleasure that I get to tell you about Free Guy, which is basically ReBoot, but starring Ryan Reynolds. Glee! Here’s the firstĀ Free Guy trailer:

The trailer for Free Guy dropped earlier today and is full of references, from They Live to Fortnite to Grand Theft Auto, and many, many more. Reynolds plays the bank teller NPC Guy who gains awareness that he lives in a video game thanks to a PC’s shades. They overlay a HUD onto Guy’s world, and he leaves behind his life as a bank teller for the exciting career change of action game hero. The movie seems to take place in the open-world game “Free City” and the real world, with both stories focusing on different sets of characters.

Video game movies have a spotty history. For every Tron, there’s a Super Mario Bros. For every Assassin’s Creed, there’s a Tomb Raider. Don’t even get me started on Pixels. They’re generally not great is what I’m saying. But there are Wreck-It Ralphs out there, and I’m hoping that Free Guy is also one of the good ones. While the premise isn’t super original, it seems like there’s a lot of heart being poured into the movie, and that’s what matters.

The star-studded cast also includes Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi. Free Guy looks like it’ll be a ton of fun when it hits theaters on July 3, 2020.
