The DJ who was responsible for Mortal Kombat 11‘s launch trailer music is being honored with a new Sub-Zero skin of his likeness. Although, you could also say they’re dishonoring Sub-Zero with his voice. Dimitri Vegas is a Belgian DJ, and while he may be a great musician, he is not a trained voice actor.
Acting performance is a subjective matter, and surely there are people out there who will commend the job that Vegas has done. Personally, I think the majority of his lines are, well, at least passable. There are even a few line deliveries that I think work pretty well given the circumstances.
We should not forget a time in video game history where nearly all voice acting was horribly awkward. Just look back to any Capcom game made in the late ’90s and you’ll get what I’m saying here. And remember, Mortal Kombat 11 also has Ronda Rousey in as Sonya Blade, which is… something. So don’t be too frosty and give the new Sub-Zero skin a warm welcome. I look forward to all the Mortal Kombat 11 live streams after this launches. I know I’m thinking about maining Sub-Zero now.
The Dimitri Vegas Sub-Zero skin releases Aug. 22 on all platforms. The skin will be free to download, meaning a fight to the death with your new favorite voice actor is unavoidable.
What do you think about Vegas’ performance? Do you think he would be a good fit for Sub-Zero in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie? What’s your favorite not-so-great game voice acting?
