Face Off: Zelda: Ocarina of Time VS Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Welcome to the weekly Nintendo Enthusiast series Face Off! Every week, we’ll be pitting two or more games against each other – sometimes from the same franchise, sometimes just similar games from the same genre. Either way, we’ll be letting you, the reader, decide who wins.

Last week’s match was between Super Mario Galaxy VS Super Mario Galaxy 2. Once again, it was an extremely close match, ending with a 57% win for the original Galaxy.

Today’s match up is between Majora’s Mask and Ocarina of Time! Two classic Zelda titles of the N64, this well loved action adventure game and its odd sequel are often considered some of the best games of all time. Before we vote, however, a couple of our forums members are going to state their cases for which game they believe is the better experience.

Both great games, but Majora makes Oot look like a caveman in terms of themes. The people of clock town literally face their annihilation but they don\’t care; they are too caught up in their personal problems. This is pitted against the very original \”good > evil.\”Majora is the best Zelda.

Both games are amazing and I would vote for both if I could.

But I\’ll vote for Majora’s Mask. I appreciate it having a more complex game design, and I love the sort-of \”rogue-lite\” aspects to improving yourself in each cycle, each time being able to do some things more quickly, or gaining access to more advanced areas and more difficult sidequests.

I\’ve been putting off getting Majora’s Mask 3D since it came out the same day as Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, but maybe now’s the time for me to buy it.

Majora’s Mask. No contest.

Why? Well, for starters, it was my first experience with the Zelda franchise, but even after playing through Ocarina of Time not long after, it lacked some of that substance Majora’s Mask had. One thing Majora’s Mask had a lot of compared to Ocarina of Time was side quests, and I love side quests. The usage of the Masks added a lot of interesting dynamics from interacting with NPCs, to simply accessing certain dungeons and fighting bosses. The Fierce Diety mask is one of the most badass iterations of Link in any Zelda game. Eat that, Adult Link from OoT! I haven\’t even talked about the time travel aspect, which is better compared to OoT. I also think the idea of giving Link a pseudo time limit really adds to that overall experience.

Playing through Majora’s Mask is a perfect example of what you can do with such a short development time on your hands, and execute it right. And when I do pick up Majora’s Mask for 3DS, I await the nostalgic feels that remind me of when I was 12 years old first time playing it.

I\’d vote for Majora’s Mask because it’s brilliant.

But I vote for Ocarina of Time because it’s the first and absolutely epic.

It was a hard decision.

Both are amazing games, but I have to give it to OoT for being the game to take the genre to the next level. So many games thereafter were modeled after what OoT did.Yes, Majora’s Mask is amazing for creating a living breathing world and for having such in-depth and interconnected stories, but we wouldn\’t have Majora’s Mask if there hadn\’t been OoT.My vote goes to OoT.

Ocarina of Time has some better over-world environments, and has seven more dungeons. Not only that but the dungeons were designed a lot better. Ocarina also gave us the ability to play as Adult Link, so that’s a plus. As sjmartin79 said, Ocarina came first, and really wow\’d everyone and showed them what 3D Zelda, and 3D games could be.

Majora’s Mask had a way better story, a lot more memorable characters. Though the dungeons weren\’t as good, or numerable, as Ocarina of Time’s dungeons, so that’s a minus. Majora’s Mask gave us the ability to transform into different races: Deku Scrubs, Gorons, and Zoras. Majora’s Mask also gave us the coolest designed Link yet – Fierce Deity.

All that said, Zelda is mainly about it’s dungeons, and Majora’s just weren\’t that good compared to Ocarina of Time’s. So…

My vote goes to Ocarina of Time.

Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask is held to ridiculously high standards for some reason, I don\’t like the game due to the repeating three-day concept or the smaller number of dungeons.
