Epic Games opens publishing deals with gen DESIGN, Remedy, Playdead

Another big name in gaming throws their hat into the publishing ring. From its humble beginnings in 1991, Epic Games developed a litany of video games, spanning from the classic Jazz Jackrabbit and Unreal Tournament series to the early Gears of War games and the free-to-play megahit Fortnite Battle Royale. Between raking in Fortnite millions, Unreal Engine royalties, big name acquisitions, the Epic Games Store on PC, and Tencent’s 40% stake, the company is now trying its hand at a new “multiplatform publishing effort” in Epic Games Publishing.

An Epic deal?

As part of a new initiative, Epic Games Publishing will distribute the next games from big names in the industry. Remedy Entertainment (Max Payne, Alan Wake, Control), Playdead (Limbo, Inside), and gen DESIGN (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian) will all collaborate with Epic Games for the foreseeable future. As for why these studios will work under the Epic Games umbrella, the terms of the partnership are certainly generous!

On their blog, Epic Games outlined three developer-friendly terms as part of this new arrangement. First, developers can enjoy full creative control and freedom while retaining 100% of their intellectual property. Second, Epic Games Publishing will front all development costs, including salaries, quality assurance, localization, marketing, and more. Finally, once costs are recouped, the company will split at least half the profits with the developer.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney states that the company’s new publishing model reflects what they “always wanted for ourselves when [they] worked with publishers.” With terms like those, I definitely would not be surprised if more developers signed up!

With all of that said, what are your thoughts on Epic Games Publishing? What do you hope to see next from Remedy, Playdead, and gen DESIGN? What other studio do you think could benefit from such an arrangement? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
