Elite Beat Agents developer Keiichi Yano once pitched a platformer to Nintendo

YouTuber Liam Robertson – the Game History Guy – recently spoke with video game designer and musician Keiichi Yano for an interview that is soon to be used for a future video. During the interview Yano, best known for his rhythm-based games Gitaroo Man and Elite Beat Agents, revealed that he had once pitched a platformer to Nintendo back in the GameCube era that was unfortunately rejected. Recalling his pitch, Yano described a rhythm-based platform game that would base its actions off of matching the rhythm of the game’s music, which Robertson later points out, is similar to the Bit.Trip series.

In Robertson’s video, at 1:42, Yano recalled the Nintendo pitch:

It was a music-based platformer. I’m sure we have video of it somewhere… But I got the idea of like –– well, wouldn’t it be cool if we had a platform game, and all of the music kinda synced to all of your movements –– much in the way that like in a Tom & Jerry cartoon, like where Tom or Jerry would animate –– like the music would play against their animation, and not the other way around. I remember that being one of the pitches, and that just kind of gracefully had its end.

Given Yano’s history of making inventive and highly addicting games in the past, I don’t doubt that a rhythm-based platformer would’ve been a killer game to see launched during Nintendo’s GameCube era. Yano’s Elite Beat Agents is often deemed one of the greatest games to release on the Nintendo DS, but if Yano pre-dated his culty rhythm-based ideas earlier during the GameCube’s life-cycle, it undoubtedly would’ve set off a bigger trend of forward-thinking rhythm games at the time Guitar Hero reigned supreme.
