Square Enix unveiled a new game at TGS 2021 called Dungeon Encounters, created by veteran staff including Final Fantasy VI, IX, and XII director Hiroyuki Ito.
The Square Enix TGS 2021 presentation mostly covered previously announced titles, but Dungeon Encounters was the only new title reveal. The game is described as a unique dungeon exploration RPG in which you’ll lead an expedition to chart the depths of an otherworldly labyrinth. You’ll need to plan and prepare to overcome various obstacles while solving puzzles and beating monsters in the labyrinths.
Hiroyuki Ito might not be a household name these days, but he’s the original creator of the “Active Time Battle” system that we’ve seen used in countless Final Fantasy titles. Moreover, Dungeon Encounters will be Ito’s first hands-on involvement in game development in quite some time. His last major credit as a director was for the original Final Fantasy XII. He also supervised Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age in 2017. Joining him is FFXII: The Zodiac Age producer Hiroaki Kato. The game will also feature character designs by Ryoma Ito and music by Nobuo Uematsu.
