DotEmu Surprises Nintendo Fans with Windjammers 2

When you think of summer, I’m sure the usual images pop in your mind. Sun shining. Frisbees being thrown. Wraparound shades. And, of course, powering up like a Super Saiyan before unleashing an explosive shot. That, or perhaps you’ve been playing too much Windjammers.

Originally released in 1994, Windjammers made quite the comeback as an enhanced port in 2017. Retro Neo Geo fans and newcomers alike (re)discovered a competitive title that still felt as fresh and fast-paced as it did over 20 years ago.

Now, game company DotEmu has surprised us yet again. Windjammers 2 has been announced and will be making a splash on Nintendo Switch in 2019.

The slick, retro-inspired animation above shows off the kind of action Windjammers fans have come to expect. Explosions, wall bounces, and power shots are all suggested to make a return. The classic pixel art style also appears to have been replaced by a more modern, hand-drawn 2D animation paint job.

While we don’t have much else to go on, DotEmu did use the phrase “enhanced gameplay mechanics for today’s ultimate disc throwers” in their official announcement post. Could motion controls be playing a part in how you throw power shots?

In a press release following the announcement, DotEmu CEO Cyrille Imbert stated the following:

Growing the Windjammers community over the past two years has been a lot of fun, and with that growth we see a great opportunity to continue to innovate on its timeless and fun gameplay. Thanks to that experience, we have a clear idea of how to make Windjammers 2 as fun and entertaining as the original.

It was also finalized that the first Windjammers will be coming to Nintendo Switch on October 23. No word yet on whether this will be a straight port of the 2017 release, or if more features will be added.

Are you excited to hit the court again and fling some discs at top speed? Let us know if you’re hyped for the return of Windjammers in the comments!
