Today on social media, stories began spreading that GameStop was canceling customers’ physical preorders for Doom Eternal on Nintendo Switch, and retailers had quietly begun to remove physical listings for the game from their websites. This led some to wonder if the game had been canceled entirely, despite id Software, Bethesda, and port specialist Panic Button all reiterating several times that development on the port was still proceeding. Now, a Bethesda spokesperson has finally verified with IGN what is going on: Doom Eternal on Nintendo Switch will be digital-only.
“While Doom Eternal is 100% on track for an imminent digital-only release on Nintendo Switch, the absence of a physical release at retail resulted in cancelled pre-orders,” said the spokesperson. “Affected customers will receive full refunds and should contact their preferred retailer for more information.”
This is, admittedly, not extremely surprising information to us at Nintendo Enthusiast, but embargoes ensure that our lips are sealed on the subject for now. In any case, you can rest easy that Panic Button’s Doom Eternal port is still coming to Nintendo Switch, but you won’t have a snazzy box to add to the rest of your collection. But since Wolfenstein: Youngblood was just an empty box with a download code in it in the first place, is it really that big a loss?
Let us know what you think.
