The big Doom news of the year is undoubtedly the arrival of Doom Eternal on Nintendo Switch sometime in the coming months, developed by id Software and ported by Panic Button. However, we mustn’t forget that Nightdive Studios is also bringing Midway Games’ Doom 64 to Switch and other platforms on March 20. And by way of an interview with USgamer, Nightdive has revealed this re-release will include a brand new chapter never seen before, in addition to minor enhancements like motion controls.
James Haley, senior designer at Nightdive Studios, revealed the following about the new chapter:
On our end, persistent players will have the opportunity to unlock a new chapter in the Doomguy’s saga, taking place shortly after [Doom 64’s] original campaign concludes. The Mother Demon you defeated in that outing had a sister, and since you’ve been messing up Hell non-stop, she tries to get rid of you by sending you away. If you can make your way back and take revenge, you’ll be rewarded with a bit of lore that fans of both series, new and classic, should enjoy.
The Nintendo Switch version of Doom 64 will have an automap that can be navigated via touchscreen, and players can also utilize optional motion controls. (PlayStation 4 also offers motion controls.) A variety of slight technical improvements can be expected as well.
This game will release for $4.99, but it is also a free bonus for those who have preordered Doom Eternal, even though the game will release later than March 20 on Switch.
