DeNA will launch new Pokémon smartphone game by March 2020

In its fiscal year 2018 operating results, Japanese mobile games and services company DeNA revealed its intent to launch a “new and exciting” Pokémon game for smartphones in the upcoming fiscal year, which ends March 2020. Absolutely zero details beyond that were provided, but it’s something to suck on for a while.

Back in February, a new Pokémon mobile game of some kind was revealed to be in development in Bellevue, WA, the home of the Pokémon Company. It’s possible there’s a connection here.

Nintendo has been in partnership with DeNA for years already. DeNA began by assisting Nintendo with the creation of the ill-fated Miitomo, which launched in 2016 and shut down in May 2018. They continue to support Nintendo in various ways on Super Mario Run, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Fire Emblem Heroes, and they are handling applications for the Mario Kart Tour closed beta.

It’s important to note that Japan-based DeNA is wholly different than San Francisco-based Niantic, the developer of mega hit Pokémon GO. They, along with Cygames, the developer of Dragalia Lost, are all helping Nintendo to build a budding mobile empire.

Nintendo’s success in the mobile realm hasn’t been as explosive and immediate as some might have expected, but they’re making respectable progress.
