Fans of 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey can jump for joy because Dark Horse is publishing The Art of Super Mario Odyssey in English. The book was initially only released in Japan and is filled to the brim with 360+ pages of insight into the creative development and art that went into making Mario’s leap onto the Nintendo Switch. Fans can get their hands on the book on Oct 22 of this year.
Over the past year, the book has been referenced on a number of occasions. Prominently, fans might recall that the book lent credence to the fact that a version of Bowsette could have existed during the Bowsette hysteria of yesteryear. Basically, it was an early concept for the game where Bowser used his own version of Cappy to take control of Peach. Of course, Nintendo squashed the idea for any official recognition of Bowsette a while back.
Dark Horse has a deep relationship with video games and art
Dark Horse is famous for bringing the art of many of our favorite games straight to our coffee tables. Famously, they released a trilogy of books regarding The Legend of Zelda series: Hyrule Historia, The Legend of Zelda Encyclopedia, and Art & Artifacts. Hyrule Historia brought us an official look at the timeline of the series, in case you ever wondered.
They capped this trilogy off this past fall with a new addition, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Creating a Champion. I actually own a few of these as well as Super Mario Encyclopedia: The Official Guide to the First 30 Years also published by Dark Horse. If these books are any indication, I’m thrilled to flip through the contents of The Art of Super Mario Odyssey.
Many of us revere games as more than entertainment, they are a true-blue art form. And in order to reach a final product, a lot of art and talent goes into the production alone. Do yourself a favor, and check out some of the art behind your favorite games. There’s a solid chance that Dark Horse will be behind it!
