Curse of the Sea Rats is a gorgeous hand-drawn Metroidvania (or “Ratoidvania”) that launched as a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year. The game set out with a modest Kickstarter goal and blew that target out of the water. Over the course of the campaign, developer Petoons Studio hit 1600% of its target, reaching all stretch goals. Now, we have a little more clarity on when the game will actually launch.

Petoons Studio is aiming to launch the game sometime in 2021. It’s coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, and PC next year, with a new trailer showing the game in its current state. The way the action blends into the backgrounds is a real highlight, and this is shaping up quite nicely.

In addition to the trailer, Publisher PQube has given us a rundown on the features of Curse of the Sea Rats. The game’s Ratoidvania style means that the game will be non-linear, providing plenty of pathways for player exploration. The game’s “12-hour” campaign will be playable in single-player or up to four-player co-op too.

The team’s hand-drawn art and animations take inspiration from Disney and Don Bluth and are one of the highlights of the game. The 2D action and 3D backgrounds turn Curse of the Sea Rats into a colorful 2.5D Metroidvania adventure.
