Codemasters Might Support Switch, But Dismisses Direct Ports from PS4/Xbox One

Codemasters is best known for its variety of racing games. The studio is behind several titles like the F1 and DiRT franchises. Since the majority of the studio’s games are simulator-oriented, they tend to require a decent amount of processing power and a control scheme that suits such a gameplay style.

When asked by GamesIndustry if support can be expected for the Nintendo Switch, the Creative Director at Codemasters Lee Mather gave a response that isn’t very hopeful. While Mather did not totally dismiss the idea, he mentioned that if Codemasters were to bring games over to the Switch “it probably wouldn’t be suitable to have exactly the same game we have running on Xbox One and PS4.”

Here’s his full statement:

“Obviously we’ve been watching how the Switch is performing and it’s selling really well. It probably wouldn’t be suitable to have exactly the same game we have running on Xbox One and PS4, but there’s certainly the possibility we’ll look at doing something on Switch. We’ll see what happens in future. It’s certainly getting the market share to make it a valid place to be.”

So, Codemasters does acknowledge that the Switch is selling well so far, but it doesn’t look like that will necessarily guarantee support. The Switch does not offer the same level of power as the PS4 and Xbox One, but that isn’t stopping 2K Games from delivering a feature-for-feature experience with NBA 2K18 on Switch. Hopefully Codemasters can take a page from 2K’s book if they ever do decide to bring a game over.

Looks like Switch owners will have to continue to settle with the upcoming Gear Club Unlimited as the only realistic racing game on the system so far.
