Captain Toad has dozens of unused stages, and you now can see them all

Captain Toad unused stages data mining SKELUX

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker came to the Nintendo Switch and 3DS last summer to the delight of fans of the Wii U classic, but returning players were quick to notice the omission of the original’s Super Mario 3D World tie-in stages. While these were switched out with the Super Mario Odyssey levels, it begs the question as to what else remained on the cutting room floor.

That question is what drove hacker and dataminer SKELUX to peer into the game’s files. His discovery? He found not only the cut 3D World stages and that game’s own Captain Toad levels, but beta versions of existing stages, levels featured in E3 demos, and more previously unseen concepts. Check it out below!

With the Special Episode DLC out of the way, it is likely that Captain Toad’s latest chapter of daring adventures has at last come to a satisfying close. Whether or not Nintendo will revisit Treasure Tracker again with extra content in the future remains to be seen, but if Super Mario 3D World were to make the Switch, it might not be unrealistic for the original tie-in stages to make a return. They’re already there in the game’s files, after all!
