One of the many returning items to also get a design overhaul, the frustratingly effective Bumper returns to the Smash Bros. series in today’s official Smash Bros. update. This marks its third (and, well, fourth too, I guess) appearance in the series due to the item being temporarily replaced with the Flipper back in Melee.
\”Pic of the day. The Bumper is back with a detailed new design. This also means there will be no Flippers.\”
\”Here’s the back side of the Bumper. There’s way too much detail put into the side you can\’t really see. The designers really went overboard.\”
The Bumper looks like quite the threat now! Well, it was certainly an annoyance back in Smash 64 and Brawl, so it should likely live up to that expectation. The Bumper returns with the Smash logo stamped on the front and engraved in steel on its backside. The steel back extends past the face plate much like the blue ring on the old design.
As Sakurai said, this also means there will once again be the absence of the Flipper, the Balloon Fight item that made its only appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Since then, the Bumper has returned to its rightful place, which makes one wonder what happened to the Flipper or why it was included in just Melee in the first place.
Thanks to fan update site smashbros-miiverse.com, there’s a visual guide to track the evolution of the Bumper from Smash 64 up until today, including the Flipper in Melee:
What do you think about the new Bumper design? What about lack of the Flipper item once again? Could both live in harmony or would you even rather both of them be excluded? Sound off in the comments!
