Nintendo announces The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel

E3 Nintendo Direct: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel announced

In classic Nintendo fashion, we got one more big announcement before the end of their E3 Direct. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is getting a sequel. Not only that, it looks to be the darkest turn the franchise has taken yet.

The cinematic starts off showing Link and Zelda traveling through some underground caverns together. The art style from Breath of the Wild looks largely retained. In the cavern, they come across a rotting corpse that seems to spring to life as we catch glimpses of Link with some sort of claw arm. Is there some sort of Eldritch-like horror in Hyrule? Are we seeing a return of the Redeads from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?

Either way, this scene alone seems like it would imply more of a focus on story than what we saw in Breath of the Wild. The story served as one of that game’s main criticisms, so expanding on that aspect in the sequel would certainly prove exciting.

Returning to Hyrule

Additionally, based on the later bits of the trailer, it seems that this entry will take place in the same world as Breath of the Wild. If accurate, that should certainly help the development team create a massive title quickly. Of course, it will no doubt feature many changes compared to the Hyrule of Breath of the Wild, ensuring that it is still interesting to explore as we seek out the differences.

It was certainly quite the reveal to cap off what has been largely a lackluster E3 2019. But leave it to Nintendo to swoop in and save the day. Are you hyped for the Breath of the Wild sequel? How dark do you think it will get? Let us know in the comments.
